HOW TO PLAY – WHAT THE PROS KNOW IN SOCCER
Tuesday, October 18th, 2011 at 12:00 amTop soccer players offer very specific insights into improving your game, but there is a common thread among much of their advice. Firstly, accuracy is more important than power or speed, and secondly, that practice is the only way to get better!
Accuracy is more important than speed. Real Salt Lake midfielder, Chris Klein, says keeping the ball under control is more important than anything else, even speed. Dribbling is a very important skill and players should learn to use both their dominant and weaker feet to control the ball and keep it away from defenders. Practice makes perfect, so Klein recommends drills to help players develop their ability to control the ball with both feet while dribbling.
Soccer superstar David Beckham told the BBC that accuracy is also the most important element of a shot. A powerful shot is worth nothing if it doesn’t hit the target, so practice accuracy first, and then work on improving power. Beckham also says putting your non-kicking foot down accurately is important because the better balanced you are, the more accurate the shot will be.
Both players say the best way to improve your game is lots of accurate practice. Focus on improving your accuracy through drills and then on improving power and speed, rather than being fast or powerful, but inconsistent.
